MAGary Indiana, 74, has passed away. He was a playwright / published author many times over and art critic for the Village Voice in the 1980s.
This is a short clip in 1984 NYC by JIM C @eastvillageartist when Gary performed by way of a reading of his writings at “The Magic Gallery”, Edward Brezinski and JimC’s 5th floor walk up gallery on East 3rd Street.

Gary was an deeply influential figure in the 80s art scene, his famous relationship to David Wojnarowicz was written about in Cynthia Carr’s excellent book “Fire in the Belly”, a must read about this incredible era and the talented artists and figures who made up this iconic scene.
Gary floated about in the art scene, not apart from it as most critics would but instead he was deeply embedded in it. The NYC 80s scene owes some of its worldwide fame and mytholgy to Gary’s writing about it. His valuable observations will be remembered and studied for years to come. His personality was volatile but his passions ran so deep and his incredible output of work so copious that there is little room here to site.
‘I think everything for me is a form of writing,’ he told The Los Angeles Times. ‘It’s a form of tracking my own consciousness and my own experience of the world in some way.’
Gary quit his post as a Village Voice art critic and concentrated his talent on his own writing.
