DELast week, we said goodbye to Hamra Farm’s Big Barn in its role as a home for our cows – marking the end of an era. The barn will no longer echo with the familiar sounds of milking. For the first time in over a century, it will stand silent, its stalls empty. The remaining cows will be relocated to other barns at Hamra Farm, as the Big Barn steps back from active duty.
Located at DeLaval’s Hamra Farm, our commercial dairy farm and home to our Research and Development Centre, the Big Barn was revolutionary when it was first built in 1901. Recognised at the time as a landmark in modern farming, the Big Barn has served us well for 125 years. But it has also grown tired. While the building will remain, it is no longer fit for the demands of modern dairy farming. Unlike our newer barns, it lacks the efficiency, comfort and technology needed to meet today’s standards. Renovation will be necessary, and its future purpose is still to be decided, but its legacy is already firmly in place.
For us this barn is more than just a structure. For generations it was the heart of our operations – a place where thousands of people passed through, each leaving their mark on our story, and where many of our early ideas were first tested, long before they became industry standards. If the walls could talk, they would tell tales of lantern boys finding their way through early‑morning fog, of late‑night milking shifts marked by quiet determination, and of both the joy and frustration that came with pioneering new approaches.
As we close this chapter, we’re not just looking back – we’re stepping forward. Last year’s major expansion has opened the door to a new future for farming at Hamra Farm.
