Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple was inspired by a real life disaster in 1971 while the band was in Montreux, Switzerland to record their album Machine Head. During a concert by Frank Zappa at the Montreux Casino, a flare gun fired by an audience member set the venue on fire, and the band watched from across Lake Geneva as smoke drifted over the water, inspiring the song’s famous title and lyrics. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore then created the now legendary four note riff, designed to be simple, heavy, and instantly memorable. Recorded using the Rolling Stones’ mobile studio in a nearby hotel after the casino burned down, the track captured the band’s raw hard rock energy and went on to become one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in music history.

TI“Made in Japan” is a double live album by English rock band Deep Purple, recorded during their first tour of Japan in August 1972. It was originally released on 8 December 1972 in Japan, with a US release on 30 March 1973, and became a critical and commercial success. The album was an immediate commercial success, particularly in the US, where it was accompanied by the top five hit “Smoke on the Water”, and became a steady seller throughout the 1970s. A three-CD set of most of the tour’s performances was released in 1993, while a remastered edition of the album with a CD of extra tracks was released in 1998. In 2014, a deluxe edition was announced with further bonus material. The album received a strong critical reception and continues to attract praise. A Rolling Stone readers’ poll in 2012 ranked Made in Japan the sixth best live album of all time.

WODeep Purple performing “Highway Star,” 1971-72.
The song didn’t begin in a studio. According to bassist Roger Glover, the band wrote it on a tour bus en route to a gig at the Portsmouth Guildhall on September 13, 1971. They were getting sick of “Speed King” as their opener and needed something new.
A journalist on the bus asked how they wrote songs. Ritchie Blackmore grabbed an acoustic guitar and started playing a riff built on a single repeated G note. Ian Gillan improvised lyrics over the top. They refined it at soundcheck. They performed it that same night. It became their set opener before it had ever been recorded.
The song evolved through live performances across the fall of 1971 before being captured for Machine Head, recorded in December 1971 in Montreux, Switzerland. The sessions were famously interrupted when the casino they planned to record in burned to the ground during a Frank Zappa concert… which became the other song.
Blackmore had specific intentions for his guitar solo. He drew on a Bach-like chord progression and said he wanted the whole thing to feel like someone driving fast, music made for speeding. Organist Jon Lord confirmed that both the guitar and organ solos were built on Bach-derived sequences.
The most celebrated live version appears on Made in Japan, recorded during the band’s first tour of Japan in August 1972. It is still the definitive recording of the song.
A song written in an afternoon on a moving bus. Played that night. Refined on the road.
