PEIs India entering a new phase of government ‘surveillance’?
The new Income Tax Bill 2025 gives tax officials the power to access your emails, WhatsApp chats, social media accounts, trading and banking apps, and other digital applications.
Officials can do this merely on suspicion of tax fraud, not on proven guilt. The government says this is nothing new, it’s simply an update of its six-decade-old powers for the digital age.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman defended the move, saying WhatsApp messages and Google Maps data have already helped trace financial fraud and tax evasion in some cases.
But critics warn that this sets a dangerous precedent. They argue such sweeping powers could be misused to harass political opponents, silence dissent, and invade the privacy of ordinary citizens.
