EXJohn 20:3-8 describes Peter and the other disciple (traditionally understood as John himself) running to Jesus’ tomb after Mary Magdalene reported it empty. Peter and the other disciple set out together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He stooped to look in, saw the linen cloths lying there, but did not enter. Then Peter arrived and went straight into the tomb, observing the linen cloths and the face cloth folded separately. Only afterward did the other disciple enter, and he saw and believed. John’s mention that he arrived first and outran Peter is written with humble, understated detail—he calls himself “the other disciple” and notes the race without boasting, yet the fact that he was faster is recorded plainly. This subtle inclusion highlights John’s eyewitness precision and perhaps a gentle, affectionate acknowledgment of their differing temperaments: John’s quicker pace reflecting his youthful eagerness and keen observation, while Peter’s boldness shows in entering first. The passage underscores the disciples’ dawning faith in the resurrection as they encountered the empty tomb’s orderly evidence.

JODerek Prince once said something that cuts straight through modern Christianity:
A soldier does not enlist without accepting the possibility of death.
Jesus said the same thing—just in different words.
“Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.” — Luke 14:27 (ESV)
And then Jesus made it unmistakably clear:
“For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?” — Luke 14:28 (ESV)
Discipleship was never presented as convenient, comfortable or safe. It was presented as death to self.
Jesus didn’t hide the cost. He didn’t bait people with blessings and reveal sacrifice later. He told the crowd plainly:
Count the cost.
Deny yourself.
Take up your cross.
Follow Me.
This is where much of the Western church has grown weak—not because we lack passion, but because we’ve redefined discipleship into something Jesus never taught.
A soldier doesn’t negotiate terms in the heat of battle. A disciple doesn’t either. Paul understood this when he wrote: “I die daily.” (1 Corinthians 15:31)
The call of Christ isn’t just to believe—it’s to surrender. Not just to be saved—but to be sent.
Not just to live for Him—but to die with Him.
“If we have died with Him, we will also live with Him.”
— 2 Timothy 2:11
This isn’t about earning salvation.
It’s about understanding what we were saved into.
The gospel costs us everything—but it gives us Christ.
Brothers and sisters, this is the call.
Not spectators.
Not consumers.
Disciples.

BUHistorical evidence suggests that John was the youngest disciple of the twelve, between 15
-18 years old when called to follow Jesus, and therefore only in his early twenties when Jesus ascended into heaven. John meets Jesus one last time in his earthly life when he is between 90-95 years old. At this point, John would have been exiled onto the island of Patmos (off the coast of modern day Turkey) by the Roman emperor Domitian, and have outlived the other eleven disciples.
This idea has rolled around in my brain for a while, and finally had the time to bring it into existence.! can’t help but wonder if John felt wondrous joy to be face to face with the father figure of his youth after some 75 years apart from him.
“Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them,” Matthew 4:21
“9 I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11 which said:
“Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”
12 | turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, [a] dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.
