WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS • - My guest on the Huberman lab podcast out now is Steven Pressfield, author of numerous best selling books and screenplays. We discussed how to overcome resistance and procrastination using practical tools, not mantras or inspirational language. - Steven wrote his first book at 52 (!) and at 82 is still incredibly mentally and physically vigorous (!) He resistance trains 5 days a week at 4:45 AM, and approaches his writing with the same rigor. 2 hours a day every day. No exceptions. - Here we are discussing what happens if you do not pursue your dreams. And while that might seem like a luxury, there are numerous accounts of people finding an hour or two per day to write or draw or do things to build out their creative dreams. - His point is not meant to scare people into doing what they love, but rather to consider seriously what they most want and to make the pockets of time to pursue that. - His point that the energy we are endowed with to make our own unique contribution to the world is a sort of divine energy is one I subscribe to… and I agree that if we don’t channel it correctly, it can end up being destructive. - The episode is filled with practical tools for very busy people that work. - The episode can be found on all platforms: YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc. and is linked out to all these at Hubermanlab.com - And as always, thank you for your interest in science! @stanford.med @stanford @steven_pressfield #neuroscience #science #ciencia #neurociencia #dothework #calling #divine #energy #procrastination #overcome #resistance

Both of these exercises can help us to quickly regain control from feelings of stress or anxiety. Physiological Sigh 😮‍💨 - By mindfully sighing a few times, you can manually reduce two key symptoms of stress within a few seconds. Inhaling twice causes the collapsed alveoli to reinflate with air. As a result, the surface area of the lungs increases and CO2 is removed from the body much more efficiently. This makes the body feel more relaxed. Long exhales cause a slight increase in pressure to the receptors in the heart. This sends signals to the brain to slow down the heart rate which creates a relaxed feeling. Half Salamader 🦎 - This vagus nerve exercise shifts your nervous system out of 'fight or flight' and into 'rest and digest'. The vagus nerve is a cranial nerve that controls our autonomic nervous system. This is the part of our nervous system that helps regulate our homeostasis (a state of balance within our body). Did you try either of these exercises? How did they feel?

HOW TO OVERCOME INNER RESISTANCE & FEAR OF FAILURE • - The first step is to identify what is the most important project for you to be working on. Turns out, there’s a simple answer to that. @steven_pressfield explains here and on the Huberman Lab podcast out now. - Comment OVERCOME in the comments section below if you would like me to DM you direct link to the podcast (in all formats). - Steven Pressfield is the author of The War of Art and seasoned expert in how to overcome the inner force of “resistance”—the self-sabotaging tendency to procrastinate on your life’s most important work that keeps you from realizing your professional and creative potential. - As the author of numerous best selling books and screenplays, Steven understands resistance, first hand, and how to overcome it. - Instead of giving inspirational stories or quotes, he shares actionable tools for defeating inner resistance that work. His approach is concrete, and can teach you how to work like a pro even if you’ve never been published or are entering a new field. - Steven’s routines for cultivating discipline and focus, including his physical training regimen (he is incredibly mentally and physically vigorous at 82), are applicable for anyone. - He gives you effective practical strategies for how to structure your day, overcome procrastination and self-doubt and do your best, most meaningful work. - The episode can be found on all platforms: YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc. Questions are also welcome; please put them in the comments section below. I’ve noticed something in recent years... As our understanding of growth and healing has deepened and complexified, it’s caused many of us to minimize the potency of small, simple, consistent actions in our development and success. I’m guilty of this, too. Big time. I want the perfect workout program so I don’t reinforce dysfunction in my body, but as I wait for that, I end up hardly exercising at all (even though I already have SOME things that I know are great for me). I want the perfect journaling prompt that gets me oriented to my day in all the best ways, but as I wait for that, I end up not writing at all (even though I already know journaling my gratitude feels great). I think aspects of this “waiting” can be wise, like the Abraham Lincon quote: “If I only had an hour to chop down a tree, I would spend the first 45 minutes sharpening my axe.” But we can become so obsessed with the sharpening that we never end up chopping. And the reality is, much of our personal development is quite simple. We know what would be good for us, and we just need to do it. More and more. It may be a more boring truth, but this is what the zen folks mean when they say “chop wood, carry water.” We have to show up and put in the reps. This is how the brain changes. The body changes. And our relationship to ourselves and life changes. Of course, these “reps” don’t have to be a forceful, “no pain, no gain” approach. Sometimes, reps look like taking 10 minutes in the morning to stare out of a window & practice softening your body’s tension instead of looking at your phone and getting more wound up. Or maybe your “reps” are working with a trauma therapist once a week. Or maybe they’re hitting the gym. Breaking a sweat. Writing a few pages of your future book. You can refine your approach as you go. But if your approach is good enough to start moving the needle, well, maybe it’s time to begin. If you’d like more support and encouragement in this process, I send free, daily text message teachings on mindfulness, life design, & personal growth. They’re completely free and you can unsubscribe at any time. To sign up, text the word “Instagram” to 1-631-305-2874 📲

Some people have asked me why is THE DAILY PRESSFIELD a 365 day a year book? The answer: When you’re doing a long project, you’re working on it every day for at least a year, sometimes longer. Because every day Resistance is greeting you when you open your eyes trying to keep you from working that day. Because it’s hard when you’re working by yourself to get motivated every day to sit down and do the work. My hope is that THE DAILY PRESSFIELD wi sit next to your computer, at your desk, in your backpack on your piano, in the kitchen, the studio. Wherever you are doing the work. I know it’s hard work. People who have never don’t it don’t know just how hard it is to face the blank “page”. I also wanted it to be something you can pick up any time of year– no excuses to put off starting. January 1, great. July 15 terrific, November 27 – get going. It’s easy to put things off. So that’s it. #thedailypressfield #thewarofart #creativesofinstagram #dothework #putyourasswhereyourheartwantstobe.
