In fact, these three steps are probably just 5% of all the work that goes in to running a Nitro Funny Car in the world of Drag Racing, both at the track and outside of it!
The driver here is Patrik Pers and this was his Funny Car in 2024 when I shot these videos which he ran under his team name “Speedghost Motorsport”.

WHDuring a run at Santa Pod Raceway in the UK, this legendary Austin A35 pickup shows what happens when aviation engineering meets drag racing culture. Known as “The Jet Austin,” the truck is powered by a Rolls-Royce Viper 535 turbojet, an engine originally designed for military trainer aircraft like the Jet Provost.
The Viper turbojet produces roughly 3,500 pounds of thrust, meaning acceleration comes from pure jet force rather than tire grip or wheelspin. Each throttle burst sends visible shockwaves through the air, shaking nearby structures and making the afterburner flames impossible to ignore.
What makes this build even more special is that the pickup still retains a conventional engine, allowing it to drive into the pits normally before switching to jet power for its run. It’s a rolling reminder that motorsport creativity has no limits, especially at a place like Santa Pod where jet vehicles are part of the culture.

DEJá reparou como, em arrancadas de altíssimo desempenho, o pneu parece se enrugar como se fosse feito de papel? O que à primeira vista soa como defeito é, na verdade, uma das maiores provas de engenharia aplicada à tração. Em largadas extremas, onde motores podem ultrapassar facilmente a casa dos 2.000 cavalos de potência, cada detalhe é calculado para vencer a inércia e transformar força bruta em avanço real. A deformação visível do pneu traseiro é totalmente controlada e desejada. A borracha se estica, cria rugas e aumenta drasticamente a área de contato com o asfalto, permitindo que mais força seja transferida ao solo no menor tempo possível.
Esse comportamento transforma o pneu em uma verdadeira mola mecânica. Ao se deformar, ele absorve o impacto inicial da potência liberada de uma só vez, reduzindo o choque no conjunto mecânico e evitando o giro em falso. Essa flexão progressiva permite que a energia do motor seja aplicada de forma gradual, mantendo a tração estável e contínua. É por isso que, em provas de drag racing, pneus slicks utilizam compostos extremamente macios, laterais mais flexíveis e estruturas internas pensadas para trabalhar sob pressões muito mais baixas do que pneus convencionais, justamente para favorecer esse efeito elástico.
O objetivo final é simples e ao mesmo tempo complexo: zero desperdício de força. Cada milésimo de segundo conta, e qualquer perda de tração significa tempo jogado fora. Esses pneus representam o que há de mais avançado na ciência dos materiais, combinando física, química e engenharia mecânica para suportar forças absurdas sem falhar. Não basta ter o motor mais potente; é preciso ter a tecnologia correta para colocar toda essa potência no chão de forma eficiente. É impressionante perceber como algo aparentemente rígido se torna flexível para suportar pressões extremas e quebrar recordes. No automobilismo de alto nível, vencer não é só acelerar mais forte, é aplicar a força certa, do jeito certo, no momento exato.

After World War II, thousands of young Americans came home with mechanical skills and a love for speed. Hot rods were everywhere, and informal street races became common across the country. The challenge was simple: two cars, a straight road, and a quick sprint to the finish.
By the early 1950s, organizers realized the sport needed structure. Groups like the National Hot Rod Association began building dedicated drag strips to move racing off public roads and into controlled environments.
Today drag racing is a global motorsport, but the core idea hasn’t changed much — line up, launch hard, and see who gets there first.

THBefore a race begins, the drag racing track is burned to clean its surface. This road is different from normal roads because it is specially built for drag racing, where cars reach very high speeds within just three to four seconds. To increase grip, a special sticky compound is applied to the track. It is so sticky that walking on it is difficult. During races, tire rubber sticks to the surface, so before the next race, the rubber is burned off and the sticky compound is applied again to restore traction.
