ADCamping in PARADISE, MICHIGAN with temperatures hovering between 20-30 degrees. The cot tent or tent cot is perfect because it keeps you off the cold ground and allows you to have 1 less thing to worry about in tough conditions. It kept me warm next to the fire and at times I was able to leave my tent flap open for extra heat! I used a vintage down filled military bag with a Coleman U.S.A. Winter sleeping bag and brunt along some wool blankets to snuggle up in as well.
I had no problem sleeping and the emergency blankets I placed on top of the tent was vital for keeping the snow/rain/ice mix from entering my cozy space.

ADCamping in February? If you have the right gear, it can be amazing.
No crowds, no bugs, no sweat, a whole different level of peace.
The first trip of the year is always intimidating, did we pack everything?
Here are our winter camping musts:
• A great 4 season tent, we love the rooftop tent and we also have a small heater if we need it in there.
• Heated camping chairs by @portaloutdoorsusa , these are so nice in winter (and during fire bans)
• Camping table, the @portaloutdoorsusa table is small, lightweight, but sturdy and makes camp cooking and eating so much easier.
• A good cold weather compatible camping stove and extra gas.
• Food that will warm your soul.
• Lots of water, making a hot water bottle at night is a game changer for warmth in the tent.
• Lots of blankets and sleeping bags rated as low as possible.
Other tips besides gear:
• Stay dry! Bring lots of layers so that if you get wet or sweaty you can change into something dry (ideally merino).
• Stay moving during the day to keep your body warm.
• Warm beverages are a must - if your feeling frisky a hot toddy is my favorite 😉

WHWe went camping with our Jeep and teardrop camper and found an amazing dispersed campsite. No snow yet this winter but still had a great time and tried some interesting cooking over the campfire. 🔥🐙🪵

WAWhen you think you’re heading to the warmth, but it’s still actually freezing
I didn’t think we would make it to the day where Florida was not gonna be in a winter jacket. I came down south escaping the harsh weather up in Pennsylvania just to have to buy a portable heater and unpack more of my winter gear. Nights dropped down to 28° and even crush had to start wearing. A hoodie.

HAThis is your sign to go car camping in winter! ❄️
Tips:
- Bring extra layers and a warm sleeping bag
- Camping can be a really affordable way to do a weekend getaway as long as you can forego some luxuries, but it is way cheaper than staying in hotels
- Established campgrounds normally charge a small fee per campsite per night, but they come with some amenities like bathrooms (maybe even a shower), water spigots, picnic tables, fire pits, and more
- Check out BLM and Forest Service land, which is usually free, but also usually doesn’t have those amenities. So you have to come prepared with your own water, food, and don’t forget a trowel 😉 make sure to check whether you can even have a fire at these campsites as some of them are in extreme high fire danger zones and please don’t make a campfire if it isn’t allowed.
- Follow Leave No Trace principles. We had to clean a lot of trash, broken glass bottles, and toilet paper 🤢 from previous guests at our campsite in this video
- Worse weather means less crowds. Bring a puffy jacket and enjoy the solitude. The view of the Whitney range blanketed in snow was beautiful and there was almost no one else around!
- A lot of these areas don’t have cell service, so come prepared in case something happens: you get injured, you get snowed in, etc. For example I bring my satellite phone with me everywhere when we won’t have reliable cell service. You should have the Ten Essentials with you in case of emergency.
