And the best leaders I know? They never wait for talent to walk up and introduce itself. Instead, they go looking for it. They notice the quiet teacher with influence. They pay attention to the one asking thoughtful questions in meetings. They see who takes the bull by the horns and champions initiatives. They see potential before it’s polished, and they do something about it. But here’s where it gets real … Developing people isn’t just about what the system needs. It’s about what that person needs too. This is something that really gets me going when it comes to developing people. Their goals. Their timing. Their confidence. Because if we only develop people to fill roles, we burn them out. But when we develop people with purpose and when we align their growth with the kind of leadership our schools actually need, NOW we’re really cooking with fire! And most of those relationships are built in small moments… in doorways, in classrooms, and yes — in the hallway.
