In 1911, Ernest Rutherford conducted the Gold Foil Experiment (or Geiger-Marsden experiment) to test the prevailing "plum pudding" model, which suggested atoms were spheres of diffuse positive charge with embedded electrons. By bombarding an ultra-thin sheet of gold foil with positively charged alpha particles, Rutherford observed that while most particles passed straight through, a small fraction (about 1 in 8,000) was deflected at large angles, and some even bounced directly back. Atoms are normally electrically neutral - the number of protons (+) equals the number of electrons (-). Adding just one extra electron to every atom would create a universal charge imbalance.
