Researchers at Georgia Tech and Emory University have developed energy-recycling stairs that store a user's energy during descent and release it during ascent. The spring-loaded stairs compress when you walk down, saving energy otherwise lost through ankle impact and braking forces by 26 percent.
When climbing back up, the stairs provide a boost by releasing that stored energy, reducing knee strain by a massive 37 percent.
