BLA lot of contractor’s think that if you pay someone $25/hr, you use that on your bid and just add your overhead and profit.
And unfortunately, I’ve been guilty of that in the past but I don’t want you to have to learn the hard way like me, so here’s a full breakdown of how we bid our labor:
Base hourly cost: the hourly rate you pay your employee
Labor burden: payroll taxes, PTO, Benefits = 35%
Labor productivity: No crew is ever 100% productive out in the field — there are always surprises, planning and things that aren’t production related to the bid.
We call this our labor productivity percentage and typically we assume our labor is 70–80% spent on production work. We adjust this based off of the season.
So to break down the equation:
(Base rate + Burden ÷ Labor Productivity) x (OH + Profit)
Base Rate: $25
Burden (35%): $8.75
Subtotal: $33.75
Labor Productivity (75% example):
$33.75 ÷ 0.75 = $45.00
Overhead 15%: $6.75
Profit 15%: $6.75
Total bid price: $58.50
That $25/hr employee actually needs to be billed at $58.50/hr just to hit 15% overhead and 15% profit.
