I am trying to learn how to draw...I’m quite new to this but I’m hoping to still learn a new vocabulary to look at certain spaces where I’m not able to reach with the photographic image anymore, I feel. I don’t know if I will get back to photography, maybe I will, I keep having these…sort of sabbaticals from photography so maybe I will get back to it in a different way. But, this is where I am right now…and my space is making me really happy at the moment. But behavioral science suggests that luck is not a feature of the universe; it is a feature of your focus. This is the psychology of the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy. ​Vanessa Van Edwards explains that your internal narrative acts as a filter. If you tell yourself you are unlucky, your Reticular Activating System (RAS), the part of your brain that filters information, will literally blind you to positive opportunities to confirm your bias. You don't miss opportunities because they aren't there; you miss them because you aren't looking for them. ​The data backs this up. In a famous ten-year study by psychologist Richard Wiseman, he asked self-proclaimed "lucky" and "unlucky" people to count photos in a newspaper. The "lucky" people finished in seconds because they spotted a massive headline that read: "Stop counting, tell the experimenter you have seen this and win $250." The "unlucky" people missed it completely because they were too anxious and focused solely on the task of counting.. Furthermore, research on neuroplasticity shows that "cognitive reframing", consciously changing your narrative, can alter neural pathways, effectively increasing your pattern recognition for positive outcomes by up to 30% over time. Finally, Dr. Carol Dweck's research on Growth Mindset indicates that those who view their traits as malleable (e.g., "I can learn to be social") are significantly more resilient in the face of failure than those with a fixed mindset. ​To change your life, you don't need better circumstances. You need a better story. Start with "small moments of heroism."
