Not because it’s fake but because it’s easier than trying to explain something you don’t even fully have words for.
There’s a strange loneliness in being the one everyone assumes is okay.
You can know exactly why you are the way you are. You can understand your own depth, your own wounds, your own resilience. But when it comes to saying it out loud, the words disappear. It’s like trying to explain a color no one else has seen.
And sometimes it’s not that we can’t explain.
It’s that we’re tired of explaining.
Or we’re afraid it won’t be understood.
Or we don’t want to feel exposed.

When someone brings you an idea, say:
“This is interesting/cool/exciting. Tell me more.”
“Was there a moment that sparked this?”
“I’m really excited about [this part] in particular…”
“What positive outcomes might occur if we did this?”
“Wow, I have never thought about that before. Let’s take some time to explore it.”
“Paint me a detailed picture of this idea.”
“Let’s spend a few minutes brainstorming how we could do this, putting practical considerations aside.”
You can also use these scripts when YOU have an idea; say them back to yourself!
Yes, it’s important to spend time exploring the issues with an idea — but the moment that someone brings it to you or that you come up with it isn’t the right time. In describing Steve Jobs’ attributes, Jony Ive said: “I think he better than anyone understood that while ideas ultimately can be so powerful, they begin as fragile, barely formed thoughts, so easily just squished.”
Ideas have the power to change the world. But in order to do that, they need to be treated with care.
