Here’s what’s actually happening: When you see those squiggly lines, specks, or shadowy “worms” drifting across your vision, it can be a sign that your body is dealing with inflammation, toxicity, or an underlying parasite load. Understandably, I was quite shocked and so I went straight to see my ophthalmologist. And whilst she could see my floaters, there was no cause for them at all. My vision (other than being short sighted with an astigmatism) was all fine. I remember being devastated at the knowledge that they may never go away. Bright days were always hard and any time I was looking at white walls. However, it’s been years now and I’m used to them. I barely notice them at all and I’ve learned to fully accept them for what they are.. these harmless little flying dots. Who else gets eye floaters?

A recent study showed that eye floaters can be reduced by 70% in a few months (doi: 10.3390/jcm11226710) The study was published in 2022. 224 people were involved. The supplement contained: ◇ Bromelain - an enzyme from pineapple ◇ Papin - an enzymes from papaya ◇ Ficin - an enzyme from fig Groups were: 1. Placebo 2. Low dose 3. Middle dose 4. High dose High doses of fruit enzymes eliminated eye floaters in 70% of people after 3 months. The middle dose did so in 62.5% of people. The low dose did in 55%. Placebo did nothing. While they seem harmless: • 80% of patients said floaters caused very severe difficulty • 78% struggled with daily activities • 90% affected while reading • 81% became dangerous while driving • 60% had work interruptions But 3 months of the fruit enzymes: • 90% felt much better • 92% reported satisfaction How is this possible though? The portion of your eye that facilitates vision is actually the back - the retina. Light is passed through the vitreous body, which is mostly water, but also has some other structural components: ↠ Collagen protein ↠ Hyaluronan (Hyaluronic acid) ↠ Chondroitin sulfate and some others. These components can become damaged due to oxidative stress - when free radicals or oxidants outpace our body’s ability to control them with antioxidants. Oxidation can directly damage these structures, and causes collagen to clump up instead of remaining structured, and can become large enough to obstruct vision. What fruit enzymes do is: 1. Have an antioxidant effect - preventing the damage to extracellular structure 2. Breaks down the collagen clumps, blood clots, and degraded hyaluronic acid Thus, both preventing the formation of new floaters and helping to eliminate existing ones. This is one of two studies that show that supplements can alleviate this annoying issue. And in fact there was another study (doi:10.7537/marsjas150419.03.) showing that simply eating pineapple daily reduced eye floaters in 70% of people!

But don’t ignore sudden changes. Here’s what’s actually happening biologically: Floaters are usually tiny clumps in the vitreous gel inside your eye. As we age, that gel shifts and small fibers cast shadows on the retina. That’s the common explanation (and it’s real). BUT. Sudden increase in floaters — especially with flashes of light or a curtain-like shadow — can signal something more serious like retinal issues. That’s when you see an eye doctor ASAP. Now let’s zoom out. Chronic inflammation in the body can affect the eyes. A clinical study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine investigated whether a supplement containing mixed fruit enzymes could help #reduce #eye floaters. The double-blind trial included 224 patients aged 30–60 years who had symptomatic vitreous opacities (eye floaters). Participants took capsules containing bromelain (from #pineapple), papain (from #papaya), and ficin (from #figs) for three months, while a control group received vitamin C as a placebo. The number of floaters was measured at baseline and then monthly using imaging techniques such as retinal photography, ultrasound, and optical coherence tomography. After three months, the results showed a dose-dependent reduction in eye floaters. The disappearance rate reached 55% with one capsule, 62.5% with two capsules, and up to 70% with three capsules per day. In patients whose floaters were caused by vitreous hemorrhage, the highest dose also significantly improved visual acuity. The researchers suggested that the fruit enzymes may help break down abnormal collagen fibers, blood clots, and debris in the vitreous, while their antioxidant activity may reduce oxidative stress in the eye.
