MAIndoor vs Outdoor FTP… adjust it! It matters!
Here are a few of the reasons why they differ indoors;
- Thermoregulation (less airflow, higher core temp, lower sustainable power)
- No micro-recoveries (constant load, no coasting or momentum)
- Momentum / ERG mode (lower inertia + ERG = higher torque demand every pedal stroke)
- Muscle recruitment (more static position, earlier local fatigue)
- Psychological load (higher RPE, less distraction)

ROWhether you’re relatively new to structured training or a seasonal racer, an FTP test usually strikes fear when it’s set and planned.
✅ The most common test that has been validated as reliable and reproducible in research is the 20 minute test. Here’s to how you can improve your suffering:
📊 Test Protocol:
👉 The standard 45 minute warm–up involved a 5 minute all-out effort before the actual 20 minute test. Studies have shown that the 5 minute effort can cause fatigue, reducing power output in the subsequent test but also making it less suitable across cyclists. A 10-20 minute easy warm-up is all you need.
📁 Correction:
👉 Research has found that with an easy warm up most participants can produce more power (which is kind of logical) so the correction to approximate your second lactate threshold might be a bit bigger, especially for riders producing higher powers.
👉 Say 260 watts+ 20 minute power shoot for 92-93% FTP. You can go with 95% as well. It’s just about finding a point at which it’s sustainable to optimise time at intensity, zones etc.
🚴 Pacing:
👉 Two options for pacing: Most riders choose a U-shaped pacing naturally, so they start faster, slow down in the middle and speed up in the end.
👉 Second option is negative pacing. Start slower than planned in the first 2-3 minutes of the test. This will delay VO2 increase, lactate accumulation etc. The result? You can increase power far more in the last minutes of the test, you might achieve a higher average power and you might perceive it as less painful.
