AKSome BTS footage of recording the 'sax' part for my track 'iamfree' from my new album (out now on cassette, vhs and digital via Halcyon Tapes - links in bio) with a Fairlight CMI IIx. I absolutely love this sound, anyone know if it's been used on anything famous over the years?
there were only around 300 of the series I/II made and only 50 of those ended up in the uk (not to mention the astronomical cost of these when new, which could be considerably more that £20000 - or more than £75000 today). The interface is mostly based around key commands (entered via the delightfully clicky mechanical keyboard) and is surprisingly intuitive. Although the less said about the light pen the better really, it sounds like such a cool idea on paper but in practice is a bit annoying. Sample based instruments are really easy to load and use, the synth it's somewhat more involved and I didn't quite manage to master it. Sampling rate is up to 32 kHz at 8bit. Despite (or bc of this) these limited specs it sounds amazing! The bass sounds are impressively warm and I love the choral / vocal based patches. All the more impressive is that this complex digital audio workstation (which also includes a sequencer) runs on 2 x 6800 processors (1-2mHz) and 208kb ram.

Developed by Australians Peter Vogel and Kim Ryrie, the CMI pioneered features such as sampling, graphic sequencing, multitimbrality, and the workstation concept. Despite its innovative capabilities, the CMI's high cost—ranging from £18,000 for the original model to £60,000 for the Series III—made it accessible only to a select few. The instrument was renowned for its remarkable bass output and overall sound quality, especially considering its 8-bit system. While sampled sounds could exhibit aliasing due to a maximum sampling frequency of 32kHz, this characteristic contributed to the CMI's distinctive sonic charm. Beyond sampling, the CMI functioned effectively as a digital synthesizer, offering substantial creative potential. Its unique sequencing approach encouraged musicians to adopt novel compositional methods, treating it akin to using eight monophonic synthesizers. SYWhen digital sampling came around, it changed music forever.
The ability to digitally reproduce acoustic instruments and sample any sound opened up completely new scenarios of exploration for new and experienced musicians alike.
Before digital recording became practical, instruments like the Welte Lichttonorgel in the 1930s, Phonogene in the 1950s and the Mellotron in the 1960s, used analog optical disks or analog tape decks to play back sampled sounds. The emergence of the digital sampler made sampling far more practical!
The first polyphonic digital sampling synthesizer was the Australian-produced Fairlight CMI, first available in 1979. These early sampling synthesizers used wavetable sample-based synthesis.
For the Fairlight Series I, a large 1×1.5×3-foot box stored the sampling, processing and ADC/DAC hardware and 8-inch floppy disk.
