The hidden cost of the FMD outbreak. Even if your farm has so far been spared from the carnage that Foot and Mouth has been inflicting on livestock farms across South Africa, the exorbitant costs associated with Biosecurity has in itself driven so many of our farming communities into deep financial losses. The mental health impact of our farming communities is taking strain. And so far, the government has made them to feel very alone. And the impact to you? The consumers? The added costs incurred by the farming communities as well as the decrease in production has already impacted the cost of Dairy and Beef, this has been widely reported by news agencies across South Africa. So what now? Now we pray that National Government, Provincial Government and Municipalities step up. And in the meantime, STOP. SPRAY. PROTECT *Please Note: This Dairy is located in an area that does not only rely on Farm Gate Biosecurity. All access points into their geographical location have biosecurity spray points managed and financed by the local community since 2025 in a bid to secure the area as a whole, including subsistence farmers. At the time of this video Feb 2026, no positive cases had been reported by the community.

Here's the FAST CHECK that could save your herd: ⏱️ THE 2-MINUTE FMD SPOT CHECK: ❌ DON'T trust these alone: • Lameness → Could be foot rot • Mouth sores → Could be bluetongue • Teat lesions → Could be mastitis • Blisters → Could be vesicular stomatitis ✅ DO look for THE FMD PATTERN: 1️⃣ SPEED TEST (0-30 seconds) "Did multiple animals get sick in 24-48 hours?" → If NO = probably not FMD → If YES = continue checking ⚠️ 2️⃣ LOCATION TEST (30-60 seconds) "Are BOTH mouth AND feet affected?" → One location only = likely something else → BOTH locations = RED FLAG 🚩 3️⃣ SEVERITY TEST (60-120 seconds) Check for ALL of these: ☑️ Extreme pain (animals refusing to move/eat) ☑️ High fever with blisters ☑️ Fluid-filled vesicles (not just ulcers) ☑️ Sudden, dramatic milk drop across herd 🎯 THE RESULT: ✓ All 3 tests positive = ISOLATE & CALL VET IMMEDIATELY ✓ Mixed results = Still call vet, mention FMD concern ✓ Negative = Monitor closely, could be similar disease ⚠️ REMEMBER: The ONLY way to confirm FMD is LABORATORY TESTING Don't wait.
