ANToday, we honor the men and women who feed this state — and this nation. The farmworkers who rise before the sun, who work through the heat and the harvest, who have built California with their hands and their sacrifice.
People talk about California's economy — our tech, our ports, our innovation. But let me be clear: none of it feeds you. Farmworkers do.
Nearly half of the country's vegetables, and over three-quarters of the country's fruits and nuts — they come from right here, California. And they get here because farmworkers show up, every single day.
The farmworker movement fought for basic human rights — rights long denied to some of the hardest-working people in our state and nation. Their courage, their persistence, their willingness to stand up and say we deserve better — that helped inspire generations of activists.
Including me.
