These two have been locking in since 1988 when Chad joined the band and they are widely considered one of the tightest rhythm sections in rock history. What you’re watching here is not a rehearsal or a soundcheck in any conventional sense. It’s two musicians who have played together for so long that the conversation between them happens entirely without words.
Flea was born Michael Balzary in Melbourne, Australia, grew up in New York, fell into the LA punk scene as a teenager and eventually crossed paths with Anthony Kiedis at Fairfax High School. He studied trumpet formally as a kid, and that foundation shaped the way he hears melody and rhythm on bass in ways that most self-taught players never develop.
Chad Smith grew up in Michigan and came up through the Detroit rock scene before moving to Los Angeles and auditioning for RHCP on a whim. Kiedis almost didn’t let him in the door because of his appearance. He sat down and played and the decision was made before the song was over.
Together they have been the foundation of every record the band has made for nearly four decades. This footage is a reminder of what that foundation actually sounds like when there’s nothing on top of it.

UNDuring Nirvana’s 1993 show in Rio, the band pulled off one of their most unexpected live twists. Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers joined them onstage, but instead of adding bass or backing vocals, he brought out a trumpet. When the opening chords of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” hit, the crowd had no idea the song was about to take a completely different direction.
The performance became a mix of raw grunge energy and chaotic improvisation. Flea’s trumpet lines cut through the distortion in a way that felt messy, loud, and totally in line with Nirvana’s unpredictable live spirit. ROOn January 23, 1993, at the Hollywood Rock Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Nirvana turned their biggest song into a controlled collapse in front of 15,000 people, and then something even stranger happened. Mid-set, Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers walked on stage not with a bass, but with a trumpet, and joined Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl for a version of Smells Like Teen Spirit that sounded nothing like the record that sold over 30 million copies worldwide. This was song 17 out of an 18-song set at Praça da Apoteose, already deep into a chaotic night that included covers, noise jams and Cobain deliberately pushing against the song that made them famous. Flea, who was originally trained as a jazz trumpeter before becoming one of rock’s most iconic bassists, played a dissonant, almost mocking brass line that mirrored the vocal melody while the band stretched the track past five minutes, turning a tight 4:38 studio anthem into something unstable and unpredictable. By 1993, Nirvana were at the peak of their global reach but Cobain’s relationship with Teen Spirit had already shifted, often choosing to distort or sabotage it live, and this moment captured that tension perfectly. Two of the biggest forces in 90s alternative music on the same stage, not collaborating for perfection but for chaos, creating one of the most circulated bootleg moments in grunge history that was never meant to be clean, repeatable or even preserved.
