This is the Flying Fish (Exocoetidae), engaging in the ultimate high-stakes physics exam: escaping a Mahi Mahi (Dorado).
The Moment:
In this split-level clip, watch the "Taxi" phase. Flying fish don't flap their wings like birds. They glide like paper airplanes. To get airborne, they use their elongated lower tail lobe like an outboard motor, beating it 70 times per second against the water to reach takeoff speed (37 mph).
The Physics of Survival:
Medium Change: Water is 800 times denser than air. By leaving the water, the fish instantly reduces Drag, allowing it to travel faster and further than the predator chasing it.
Ground Effect: By gliding just inches above the ocean surface, they trap a cushion of high-pressure air under their wings, extending their flight time up to 45 seconds!
The Predator:
The Mahi Mahi is one of the fastest fish in the ocean (50 mph). It tracks the flying fish from below, waiting for gravity to bring it back down.

REDid you know there are around 64 species of flying fish, and yes, they really do take to the skies - technically gliding - up to 200 meters (over 650 feet) through the air to escape predators like tuna and marlins, while trying to avoid birds overhead. 🌊🐟✈️
With a burst of speed, flying fish whip their tails to launch themselves out of the water, then spread their wing-like pectoral fins to drift gracefully, much like birds. The air passing under their fins creates lift, and they even tap the water with their tails to extend their flight—a technique known as "taxiing."
Although they can't change direction mid-air, their gliding skills are essential for survival in the competitive ocean environment. Even more fascinating, flying fish play a vital role in coral reef ecosystems by spawning near reefs, where their eggs provide food for smaller marine life. This supports the biodiversity that coral reefs rely on. 🌏💙
