CHSimple magic doesn’t mean it’s less powerful.
When you work with the spirit of what you are petitioning - when you form relationships, become part of an ecosystem, give honor to the allies in your court - simple becomes the most powerful.
Folk magic & folk witchcraft doesn’t just include the benedicaria - the blessing - and the apotropaic. Yet this is our first line of defense - this, I am taught, is usually all we need.
You can definitely catch me in the kitchen or garden making folk medicine & magic for myself and my community - but this isn’t all that my practice is.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - folk magic is for resistance. That means not just creating community, stability, and caring for each other - but realizing that that care can sometimes mean creating justice.
And justice isn’t something we get to decide - it’s something we ask the cards. We ask the client. What is justified?
At protests - in a system where particular marginalized groups are targeted with violence - with detainment without due process - protection isn’t always enough.
I’ll be talking about both the blessing & bane of my practice & Italian-American folk magic this summer @salemwitchfest.
How community protection is rooted in diasporic & IA folk magic, how cures operate, and lastly a theoretical approach and my own research on the curses that are famed in this practice - should we approach them? Can we approach them in a justified manner?
What do we do when protection isn’t enough?
This class is through an Italian American lens - honoring cultural context of why these spells are seen negatively - while also making space for the possibility of the theoretical - what if we do need to curse? What does it look like? How do we approach it with respect?
