MEYou can live life being controlled by your emotions, OR you can learn to regulate them and consciously choose better actions.
Now before you go and say “well Freemans, that’s not easy when I’m pissed in the moment.”
Of course it isn’t easy. It takes commitment and practice, but it’s a MUST if you want your conflict to be constructive, instead of destructive.
We think this is important for ALL couples, but ESPECIALLY if you have kiddos watching you.
So some tips of de-escalation:
1️⃣ Make it a goal to realize that tension is building. You can’t change a pattern of you don’t recognize when it’s happening.
This takes being more present and attentive.
2️⃣ Slow down your responses and don’t say everything that comes to your mind. When you’re triggered, the not-so-great parts of us come up.
3️⃣ Rememeber that when you’re triggered, your brain is there to protect you from a perceived “threat.” Meaning, your primal instincts take over and you aren’t thinking as clearly. This is where you need to discern if you are able to cool off and stay ENGAGED in the conversation or if you need a pause.
4️⃣ It can be helpful to have a code word or phrase that you two use if you realize things are getting destructive or too heated.
5️⃣ Remember that it’s okay to disagree or be upset with each other… but it’s not okay to act or speak in ways that pit you against each other. Fight for the marriage more than you want to be right. They aren’t the enemy; the challenge you’re facing is.
