Here’s what functional medicine wants you to actually know: 1️⃣ Many brands aren’t just milk + cultures Added gums, stabilizers, thickeners, and “natural flavors” can disrupt the gut lining and microbiome over time. 2️⃣ Low-fat versions spike blood sugar When fat is removed, sugar is often added. That combo can drive insulin spikes and inflammation... especially if yogurt is your daily breakfast. 3️⃣ Protein quality matters more than protein grams Highly processed dairy proteins don’t signal the body the same way whole, minimally processed foods do. 4️⃣ Dairy tolerance is individual, not moral Bloating, acne, fatigue, or congestion are feedback, not weakness. 2025 was a YEAR. Like a year year year. It had a lot of ups but it also had a lot of downs. But guess what, not only did I bounce back, but I relaxed. Like legit relaxed, not just faking it. I’m reaching for my phone less, I’m clearer headed, and I’m more intentional than ever with my time. And I know a lot of you have been here for a few years and followed my health journey with functional medicine and getting control over my bloodwork, toxicity, and hormones. The good news is I went back to my doctor (I had to take a break while pregnant and nursing Darla) and just go my bloodwork back last week - and guess what!?! It reflected how I feel. It was GREAT! As I go into this next year I’m sharing everything I’m doing (and have done) to get to this point. It’s been a LOT, but I don’t discount one single piece of my story and you shouldn’t ignore your story either. We are created by our experiences and we build our happy one little moment, one little win, one little loss, etc…at a time. Can’t wait to see what 2026 has in store. 😘

As a traditional nutritionist, I failed many times with iron deficiency cases. I would prescribe iron supplements. Improve dietary intake. Adjust meal timing. Increase vitamin C. And I genuinely believed that if the patient followed everything correctly, ferritin would improve. Sometimes it did. But many times, it didn’t. Women would come back exhausted. Ferritin barely rising. Or rising slightly, but symptoms unchanged. And I remember thinking, what am I missing? Because iron deficiency is not always about low intake. Some women were not absorbing iron due to gut dysfunction. Some had underlying infections or inflammation elevating hepcidin, the hormone that locks iron inside storage cells. Some were losing iron faster than they could replace it because of heavy periods or endometriosis. Some had chronic stress physiology affecting utilization. No amount of supplementation can override blocked absorption, chronic loss, or inflammatory signaling. Learning functional medicine was a turning point for me. It shifted my approach from simply replacing nutrients to investigating why the body was not allowing those nutrients to work. The question changed from: “How do we increase ferritin?” to “Why is ferritin not improving despite intervention?” That shift changed my clinical outcomes and my confidence as a practitioner. Iron deficiency is often a symptom, not the root problem. This wasn’t overlooked. It was measured against the wrong range. The most common thing being missed when you’re told you’re fine is storage iron. Not anemia. Not total iron. Not whether you meet the lab’s minimum. Ferritin. Standard care is designed to rule out disease. It is not designed to restore sufficiency. So if your hemoglobin is normal, you’re cleared. Even if your reserves are nearly gone. Symptoms don’t disappear. They migrate. Because the shortage keeps spreading. Fatigue becomes anxiety. Anxiety becomes insomnia. Insomnia becomes hormone instability. Each one treated separately. None of it traced back to depleted stores. This isn’t rare. It’s common in women whose bodies have been compensating for years. Ferritin sits at the center of oxygen delivery, thyroid conversion, blood volume, and autonomic stability. It is one variable in a system. When reserves are low, the body adapts before it fails. Adaptation looks functional. It does not feel livable. Most women are given the same few iron options, pills and standard infusions, even when those approaches do not rebuild or hold stores. Without orientation, the same strategies get repeated while depletion continues underneath. Your symptoms were not mindset failure. They were signals. Compensation. For decades, I lived with hidden exhaustion, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and hormonal chaos. I was dismissed and medicated in conventional medicine, and then cycled through supplements, optimization, restrictive elimination diets, HRT, and detoxes with functional medicine; while the root cause remained a mystery. I’m sharing this because I wish someone had explained it sooner, before years and fortunes were spent treating symptoms instead of the signal. I want that clarity for you.
