The Grand Junction Fire Department Drone Team captured this moment last Wednesday as Grand Junction firefighters, assisting the @lowervalleyfiredist, manually closed valves on lines feeding flammable material to the industrial fire at 1629 21 Road. Up to that point, crews had been actively cooling the fire and surrounding area to prevent fire spread and new ignitions. Once the flow of flammable material was shut off, firefighters were able to fully extinguish the fire. When the flames go out, our job isn’t finished. Crews responded to a residential fire with a rapid, coordinated attack to stop the spread and protect nearby homes. Once the visible fire was knocked down, firefighters began the critical work of overhaul, searching for hidden hot spots, opening walls and ceilings, and cooling smoldering materials to ensure the fire doesn't reignite. This phase takes time, precision, and patience. What may look like “cleanup” is actually one of the most important steps in protecting lives and property. Confined spaces are some of the most dangerous environments first responders face. Tight access, limited air movement, hidden hazards, and the risk of secondary collapse leave zero room for error. These incidents demand precise planning, constant communication, and absolute trust in training. That’s why our crews regularly turn everyday spaces into high-risk training grounds. By simulating real-world confined-space rescues, firefighters sharpen technical skills, practice problem-solving under pressure, and reinforce safety procedures that protect both the victim and the rescuers. Training like this isn’t flashy but when lives are on the line, preparation makes all the difference.
