1. The Night King had a bigger goal
The Night King wasn’t interested in random soldiers. His main target was Bran Stark, the Three-Eyed Raven. Killing Bran meant erasing humanity’s memory. Sam wasn’t important to that mission, so he ignored him.
2. Arrogance and confidence
The Night King believed his army of the dead would automatically kill everyone. He didn’t need to personally fight Sam because he thought victory was certain.
3. Symbolic contrast
Sam represents knowledge, history, and survival. The Night King represents death and forgetting. Letting Sam live may symbolically show that knowledge survives even the darkest times.
4. Plot protection
From a storytelling point of view, Sam was important for the ending (revealing Jon’s parentage and helping rebuild Westeros). So the writers kept him alive.
