‼️ Check this out: While speaking at the 13th annual Garifuna Conference at the head of Garifuna Heritage month, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Godwin Friday, stressed the importance of not only recognizing Garifuna history within the diaspora, but integrating our language into core curriculum in schools across the island. “The Garifuna language, recognised by UNESCO as a cultural heritage, must be revived and developed here…” Dr. Friday also called for stronger support and visibility of Garifuna arts and traditions, emphasizing that the nation’s identity is not whole without the Garifuna people and our culture being fully recognized and included. I was super excited to try this when visiting my dream destination and it did not disappoint ! Garifuna People: This was also my first time learning about Garifuna people . The Garifuna (also called Garinagu) are an Afro-Indigenous people with roots in West Africa, the Caribbean, and the Indigenous Arawak and Carib peoples. After conflicts with the British on St. Vincent, the Garifuna were exiled to Roatán, an island off the coast of present-day Honduras. Many later moved to the mainland of Central America, settling along the Caribbean coasts of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.The Garifuna maintain a distinct language (Arawakan-based with African and European influences), music and dance traditions (like punta and paranda), and spiritual practices that blend African and Indigenous beliefs. In 2001, UNESCO recognized Garifuna language, music, and dance as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. #blacktravel #blacktravelfeed #solotravel #traditionalfood #travelblogger #diaspora
