As of March 12, 2026, India is experiencing a significant LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) supply crisis primarily triggered by escalating military conflict in West Asia involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
The disruption is largely due to the effective closure or high risk of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime artery through which roughly 85–90% of India’s LPG imports pass.
Commercial Sector Shutting Down: The crisis has hit the hospitality industry hardest. In Mumbai, approximately 20% of restaurants have reportedly shut down, with warnings that up to 60% could follow if supply isn’t restored.
Price Hikes: Effective March 7, 2026, prices for domestic 14.2-kg cylinders rose by ₹60 (to ~₹913 in Delhi), while 19-kg commercial cylinders jumped by ₹115 (to ~₹1,883 in Delhi). Black market rates for commercial cylinders have reportedly touched ₹3,000 in some areas.
Panic Buying & Stockpiling: Long queues have been seen at gas agencies in cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Lucknow. This panic has also led to a massive surge in sales for induction cooktops, with many models selling out online on platforms like Amazon and Blinkit.
Essential Services Affected: Shortages have reached school mid-day meal programs, hospital cafeterias, and even the Indian Railways, which has advised caterers to switch to induction or microwave cooking.
Prioritising Households: The Centre has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to prioritise gas for domestic kitchens and farms over industrial and commercial users.
Production Ramp-up: Refineries have been ordered to maximize output, with Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stating that domestic LPG production has been stepped up by 28% in the last five days.
Supply Rationing: To prevent hoarding, the government has increased the mandatory gap between domestic cylinder bookings from 21 to 25 days.
Diversifying Sources: India is actively seeking imports from non-Hormuz regions (like the U.S. and Norway) and has expanded its sourcing network from 27 to roughly 40 countries.
