It’s a stunning replica of the ship Christopher Columbus sailed in 1492, and it’s open to explore at St Katharine Docks from May 29th to June 8th. It’s a rare chance to step aboard a full-scale reconstruction of one of the most iconic vessels in maritime history. Of course, it’s also a controversial symbol. While the journey of the Santa María marked a turning point in global history, it also represents the beginning of colonisation in the Americas (Britain, Spain, Portugal, France, Netherlands, Denmark) and the impact on Indigenous peoples. It’s a powerful reminder that history is complex. UNESCO’s Eurocentric approach framed Ethiopia’s heritage in ways that aligned with Western ideals of civilization—emphasizing its Christian and Semitic connections over its African roots. By portraying Ethiopia as an ancient empire with Middle Eastern ties, UNESCO contributed to a distorted perception of Ethiopian identity. Despite this narrative, Ethiopia has always stood in solidarity with African nations and oppressed Black people worldwide, playing a key role in the Pan-African movement and anti-colonial struggles. However, this historical reality contrasts with the fact that some Ethiopians reject the label “Black” or “African” and instead prefer to identify either as “Habesha” , their ethnic group or as “Ethiopian”.
