Group B Strep Screening is typically around 35-37 weeks 💩 GBS is thought to effect 20% of pregnant women and is an important risk factor neo-natal early onset sepsis. Probiotic supplementation starting at 30 weeks appeared to be statistically signifiant for reducing the occurance of GBS in a meta-analysis published in 2022. PMID: 36364782 Specific strains showing benefit include: Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus rhamnosus ✨ Potentially this can go beyond pregnancy, and in those who test positive for Group B Strep in comprehensive stool samples when looking for causes of digestive upset. 🧩Group B strep testing is simple and painless. It is done with a cotton swab on the mother’s vagina and rectum. 🧩Group B strep can cause serious health consequences. Correct management is essential! 💡Group B streptococcus is a bacteria that can colonize the rectum and vagina. If present during pregnancy, the baby can get infected at birth. 💡Infection occurs in a small percentage of babies exposed to the bacteria, but can be severe and include blood infections or meningitis. 💡Babies can be exposed at delivery or later. Their immune systems are very weak for the first several weeks. So important to observe careful hand washing. 💡Pregnant women are screened at around 37 weeks to determine if they are a carrier. A sample is sent from the vagina and rectum to the lab for culture. 💡If positive, it is not an emergency. The doctor will just want to treat you with antibiotics more than 4 hours before delivery. 💡If there is not time to treat before delivery or if mom refuses, then the baby will need to be monitored for at least 24-48 hours for signs of infection 🌟Send this to a third trimester mom! ❓Message me with your baby questions!

It’s caused by being handled in the hospital, unclean hands, etc SO many ways to prevent this than taking antibiotics! Iodine for one… taken internally prenatally keeps the amniotic fluid sterile!
