CLA kind comment at the supermarket today turned into a very strange moment.
A man helped me pack my groceries and said,
“I admire you so much getting out and about by yourself.”
I had Mabel with me.
I know he meant it kindly. People often say things like this because they imagine what blindness would feel like to them, not what it’s actually like to live with.
For me, I was just doing the groceries. Nothing particularly inspirational about that.
For most of us with disabilities, this isn’t bravery.
It’s just Tuesday.
But then he added:
“If it was me, I would have topped myself.”
A couple of months ago a comment like that might have sent me spiralling.
Today it didn’t.
I simply said:
“No you wouldn’t. You’d adapt.”
Because that’s what humans do.
Blindness isn’t the end of life.
It’s just a different way of navigating it.
Then I finished packing my groceries and carried on with my day.

WAEver wondered why I take Liberty’s harness off on the bus? 🦮
Simple answer…
Because she’s not working in that moment.
When we’re walking, that harness means:
“I’m guiding. I’m responsible. I’m switched on.”
But on the bus…
we’re sat down, safe, not navigating obstacles or traffic.
So I take it off to give her a break.
It tells her:
“You can relax now. You’ve done your job.”
She can switch off mentally, rest, and just be a dog for a bit ❤️
Then when we get off…
the harness goes back on…
…and she’s straight back to work like the professional guide dog she is.
It’s not just about getting from A to B.
It’s about looking after her as well.

WAThis is how close it came.
Liberty walks me to the crossing.
Finds the button.
Waits.
The signal tells me it’s safe.
Go.
But listen carefully…
That same moment… a vehicle drives straight through the red light.
Right where we’re about to step.
Now really think about this…
If I had trusted that crossing…
If I had said “forward” one second earlier…
Me and Liberty would’ve walked straight into it.
Not injured.
Gone.
I stopped because I could hear it.
But what if it was silent?
What if it was electric?
What if it was a child stood here instead of me?
Taught their whole life… green means go.
They don’t question it.
They step out.
And that’s it.
This isn’t just dangerous…
This is how people get killed.

WAFrom a free run straight back to guiding me… even without the harness.
Vince on one side, Liberty on the other, both my babies naturally keeping me lined up and walking me straight towards my mum’s red car.
Two Labradors. Eight paws. One completely blind bloke in the middle trusting them every step of the way.
People think guide dogs only work in harness… but the truth is the bond never switches off. They’re always watching, always thinking, always looking out for me.

Most people think stopping to let us cross is helping.
But guide dogs are trained NOT to cross in front of vehicles — even if you wave us on.
