I used to have every excuse in the book. I didn’t have time. I was exhausted. The kids kept me up all night. I told myself I’d start when life slowed down and I got more sleep. But then there was a moment I’ll never forget. I woke up already overwhelmed, everyone needed something from me, and I snapped at my son. I immediately regretted it and in that moment, I knew something had to change. What I realized was simple but life-changing: I wasn’t starting my day with intention. I don’t move my body every single day. Sometimes it’s just 2-3 mornings a week. But when I wake up before my kids and pour into me first, even just 20 mins before the house, everything changes. I feel clearer. More grounded. Calmer. More patient. And now, with four littles, I truly can’t imagine not making this time for myself. I get asked all the time how I wake up so early, and it starts the night before. Going to bed at a reasonable hour. Choosing rest over scrolling. Turning off the TV. Because I promise you an hour of TV at night is nothing compared to an hour of filling your cup in the morning. I wish someone had pushed me to take action sooner. I challenge you to take a look at your screen time this week. Use even half of that time to move your body, start something you’ve been putting off, or pick back up a hobby you loved before kids. So often as moms, we put ourselves last… and then wonder why we feel depleted. You deserve to show up as your best version and when you do, your whole family will feel the difference. It quieted the food noise for me, so I could choose normal portions and still enjoy family meals without sacrificing food that I liked. It’s just a tool. I had to do the work and continue to do so: prioritizing protein in every meal, weekly strength training, and eating mindfully. What it really did was it made all the effort I was putting into weight loss ACTUALLY effective. Confused by microdosing myths? The wins you set for yourself can be short and small on days you’re really struggling but you can also invest more time and energy into one or all of these areas when your capacity allows. A physical win could be a 10 minute walk, some bodyweight exercises, taking the stairs or a simple stretch. For a mental win, read a few pages of a book, learn something new or create something (draw, write, craft…). And a spiritual win? You don’t need to be religious. Gratitude practice, mindfulness, prayer, meditation, or quiet self-reflection. None of these micro-wins requires major effort and that’s the point. Setting small goals allows you to build sustainable habits. And even small habits, when done daily, will have a significant impact on your wellbeing and motivation.
