Sometimes we focus so much on explaining the Frontenac Arch as a north-south migratory corridor based on the ancient Precambrian Shield (also known as the ‘Canadian Shield’ but it’s about a billion years older than Canada) that we forget to mention that the arch is really an axis. A critical point between two major migratory pathways. The second moving east-west with the water, connecting the Great Lakes with the St Lawrence Kahnekarónnion (River) 🌊
Here’s a video of FABN staff, Christine and Savanah, out doing some water sampling in the FAB Region last fall as part of the Ecological Corridors Project with @a2acollab and @plentycanadaofficial
We’re looking forward to doing more water sampling through the ‘Engaging Community Scientists to Enhance Understanding of Water Quality in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Region of the Upper St. Lawrence River’ project which will train local community members to monitor water quality. 🔬
Community observations will contribute data to water quality monitoring at the @riverinstitutec and @cataraquiconservation and strengthen community awareness and stewardship as members of the Kahnekarónnion (River) Strategy Collective. We’ll share more about how to get involved this year!

WEIt’s becoming clearer every year that water is not just an environmental issue. It is one of the most important forms of real security we have.
While many industries are being reshaped by rapid advances in AI, there is growing uncertainty around what work will still be needed in the near future. Entire job categories may change or disappear within months.
But working with land and water is different.
Water cycle restoration is grounded in real landscapes, real systems, and real needs.
Droughts are intensifying. Floods are becoming more destructive. Water is becoming more valuable.
And the ability to read land, capture rain, and build systems that hold water is only becoming more relevant.
It is one of the most stable and needed skill sets, both for landowners and for people building a career.
We have seen this directly. Many of our students have gone from learning these skills to creating meaningful, stable work in less than a year. Designing projects, working with clients, and restoring landscapes in very practical ways.
Ponds, for example, are one of the fastest ways to build water security. But knowing where to place them, how to design them, and how to build them so they last is what makes the difference between success and costly mistakes.
This is exactly why the Water Stories Core Course exists.

If you miss it, the next opportunity will be in 12 months in 2027.
It’s worth asking what kind of skills will still matter in a rapidly changing world.

SLThe Great Salt Lake doesn’t shrink overnight. It declines slowly — year by year — when more water is diverted upstream than reaches the lake. 🌊
According to the Great Salt Lake Strike Team report, residential water use accounts for roughly one-sixth of the lake’s annual depletion, largely due to outdoor irrigation. 💦🌱
That means the water we use on our landscapes directly affects how much water stays in the system.
Everyone plays a role:
• 🏡 Residents
• 🚜 Agriculture
• 🏙️ Cities
• 🏢 Businesses
This isn’t about blame — it’s about shared responsibility.
When we:
• Adjust irrigation schedules
• Fix leaks
• Reduce unnecessary watering
• Rethink high-water landscapes
More water can remain in our rivers — and ultimately reach the lake. 🌊🏔️
