REDe Harlem Shake is een virale internetmeme en danshype uit begin 2013, gebaseerd op het nummer “Harlem Shake” van Baauer. De korte video’s, meestal ongeveer dertig seconden lang, volgen een vast patroon. In het eerste deel danst één persoon, vaak met een helm of masker op, terwijl de mensen om hem heen hun normale bezigheden blijven doen, bijvoorbeeld in een kantoor, klaslokaal of andere alledaagse omgeving.
Wanneer in het nummer de zin “Do the Harlem Shake” klinkt, volgt een plotselinge overgang, ook wel de “drop” genoemd. Op dat moment verandert de scène abrupt: via een snelle montage is de ruimte ineens gevuld met mensen die verkleed zijn en op een chaotische, ongecoördineerde manier dansen. Vaak gebruiken ze daarbij opvallende kostuums, maskers of vreemde attributen, wat de absurditeit van de scène versterkt.

Within weeks, thousands of versions were uploaded daily from college dorms to the Norwegian Army and NBA teams. The wave was so massive that Billboard changed its chart rules to include YouTube streams, sending “Harlem Shake” to No. 1 on the Hot 100, the first time a meme pushed a song to the top like that.
It wasn’t just a trend, it was a synchronized moment in internet history that the whole world shared at once.

HOOn February 2nd, 2013, a group of teens from Australia created the first viral Harlem Shake video, getting 1M views in just days, even before TikTok existed.
Within 5 days, over 250,000 videos were uploaded with the same trend, and reaching 1 billion in cumulative views.
In this trend, there is one person dancing awkwardly for the first several seconds while everybody in the back act casual.
Within 15 seconds, there is a hard DROP followed by an abrupt cut to everyone going berserk in costumes and masks, and flailing randomly.
The absurdity and lack of explanation was the magic. No one asked "why”, you just did the dance.
The hype lasted almost 3 months into April 2013, as copycats began saturating feeds.
And we need to pay homage to this trend, as it paved the way for Ice Bucket Challenge, Mannequin Challenge, and TikTok's entire format as we know it today.
