BEIn 1921 a manuscript was created in Isfahan Persia that focused on demons magic and astrology It contains around fifty-six illustrations showing strange and terrifying creatures One of the most unusual images shows a demon licking the foot of a sleeping human This figure represents a nightmare demon meant to warn or scare people rather than depict a real event The manuscript belongs to a long tradition of Persian demonology which combines pre-Islamic beliefs about Divs and daevas with Islamic ideas of jinn and shayatin The illustrations show hybrid creatures part human part animal with claws horns and other monstrous features They were used by soothsayers and practitioners of magic for rituals protection or divination The toe-licking demon is an example of the creativity and imagination of occult artists in Persia during the early twentieth century It reflects cultural ideas of vulnerability sleep and supernatural danger
