Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Thursday said the delayed swearing-in of Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ) had “zero” to do her pledge to become the decisive 218th signature on a discharge petition to force a vote on the Epstein files.   “I look forward to administering the oath of office to her to make her an official member of the House as soon as we get back to regular session,” he said on C-SPAN’s morning call-in show, “Washington Journal.”   “Right now, Chuck Schumer holds the cards on when that can happen because he is the one that has shut down the government. And that is our problem.”   Rep.-elect Grijalva won a special election in Arizona’s 7th District on Sept. 23 to fill the seat of her late father, former Rep. Raul Grijalva (D), but has yet to be sworn in as the House remains out of session for a third week in a row.   Democrats claim the speaker is delaying the swearing-in because she will provide the 218th signature to a discharge petition that would force the House to vote on a bill to compel the Justice Department to release files related to Jeffrey Epstein.   Speaker Johnson said the petition has nothing to do with the delay and that it was a different situation than when he swore in two Republicans from Florida during a pro forma session earlier in the year.   “The difference between them and Rep.-elect Grijalva is that her election was secured after the House was out of session,” he said. “We’re going to administer her oath as soon as she gets back. This has zero to do with Epstein.”   The speaker added that the House Oversight Committee was “working overtime” on its Epstein investigation.   “I am in full support of that, always have been, maximum transparency. The only thing we want to make sure of is that we’re protecting the names of the innocent victims,” he said.   “We think there may be a thousand women who were subjected to heinous, unspeakable crimes at the hands of these traffickers, and we got to make sure we protect them from further harm.
