Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Tuesday said the aim of his speech before British Parliament was to “calm the waters” between the two close allies amid President Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on countries that oppose the U.S. acquiring Greenland.   “I told the president that I felt that my mission here today was to encourage our friends and help to calm the waters, so to speak. Using the R word is not only a seriously outdated, dirty, filthy word-it is disgusting. It blinds people from seeing capabilities . Its use degrades and dehumanizes people with disabilities. When used -it’s hurtful and wounds millions of people, their families and friends. You have the power, Mr. President and position to set an example. We are asking you TO BE BETTER . Rise UP. Lead by example and stop using this word. It is a big deal to millions . The word is not acceptable, and it perpetuates a stereotype that millions of families have worked tirelessly to eradicate . When leaders use language like this, it does real harm. It signals that bullying, making fun of vulnerable people, and cruelty is acceptable. Last week I was grateful to get to speak to Holy Trinity Parish. I shared about how clear and consistent the Catholic Church has been on the dignity of the human person - no matter how unpopular or popular. God is incredibly merciful - Jesus did not leave Christians to live in confusion and disunity, but to be One in the Him and in truth. Matthew 16:18-19 “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.””
