🫶🏾 Today marks International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed annually since it was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1966. It commemorates the tragic events of 21 March 1960 in Sharpeville, South Africa, when peaceful demonstrators protesting apartheid laws were met with violence. Yesterday, on behalf of the City of Hobart, I spoke at the Together for Harmony: Young Voices Shaping Change - with many students from various different schools walking against racism. ❌ Racism, in all its forms, undermines the very foundation of our society. It divides communities, limits opportunities and prevents us from reaching our full potential as a united and diverse community. It is our shared responsibility to challenge discrimination wherever we see it, to support policies that promote equality and to educate future generations about the importance of inclusion and respect.
