Symptoms can include abdominal pain, bloating, gas, discomfort , diarrhoea and/or constipation. Dysbiosis which is an imbalanced microbiome (gut bacteria) can also be linked to symptoms. There are things we can do to improve symptoms: 1- Going out for walks, spending time in nature or journalling can be really helpful. We cannot eliminate stress but we can improve our resilience by incorporating micro-habits that help us cope better. This has a knock on effect on our gut health via the gut-brain axis. 2- The way we eat can impact our gut health, mindfully eating and preparing your meal supports better digestion and don’t forget to chew your food! Your stomach doesn’t have teeth and we need to mechanically break down food to support digestion. 3— Include a probiotic . My unpopular opinion as a gastroenterologist: IBS is not just a gut problem. It’s a systems disorder driven by disrupted communication between the brain, gut, and microbiome. Symptoms like abdominal pain, anxiety, and changes in bowel movements are often triggered by chronic stress and poor diet. These stressors alter brain networks, gut motility and secretion, and disrupt the gut microbiome creating feedback loops. While strategies like the low FODMAP diet or antibiotics for SIBO may offer short-term relief, they come at the cost of your long-term gut health. This IBS Awareness Month, I’m inviting you to rethink how we approach IBS because healing the gut starts with understanding the whole system. 5 THINGS I DO TO MANAGE MY IBS💩   1. Eating Mindfully - I try to eat mindfully throughout the day as digestion starts in the mind, so get present while you’re eating and take the time for you. Sit down, breathe and chew your food 10-15 times per mouthful. Don’t rush, this way you will soak up all the nutrients which in turn helps with more efficient digestion. I find this way I enjoy my food so much more.   2. Journaling - Journaling can be great for you, emotionally, mentally and physically. For me Journaling is a great stress management tool for recognising and reflecting on when I may be having problems with my IBS. Journaling can help you get to know yourself better and take charge of your healing.   3. Meditating - Mindful practices such as meditation have been shown to improve the quality of life for IBS sufferers. I certainly believe it has helped me manage my symptoms. Meditation improves the ability to concentrate and feel relaxed in the moment and reduces any anxiety. Meditation also activates the part of your nervous system important for optimising digestion.   4. Exercising - Exercise is a great energy booster, and can help to reduce bloating and improve bowel movements. I used to let life get in the way of making time for exercise, but what has helped me is scheduling it in my diary as if it’s an appointment that I can’t miss. It might be that you walk, cycle, or jog on your breaks from work.   5. Making a food diary - A food diary is great for helping you understand which kinds of food work and those that don't work for you and your IBS. A diary can help to identify your triggers and find ways to manage them/ avoid a flare up.
