What is the ICCPR and why am I in Switzerland talking about it?! 📲 watch and see! Here’s the steps on how we got to today: 1️⃣As citizens we submitted reports to help the UN Human Rights Committee see how the US is falling short from the treaty we signed in the 1990s to protect human rights. My group @obs4rj collected 70 submissions of abortion seekers and providers harmed after Roe fell that went into our report about abortion access and how to the US is failing its citizens. 2️⃣In addition to these reports we spent the past few days testifying and sharing stories with them so they could see the real impact. 3️⃣They take our reports and testimony and use it to formulate questions to the US representatives here and over 2 days of questioning get their answers. 4️⃣The Human Rights Committee will then issue a report of their concerns and recommendations they have. This will come in a few weeks. ie, they tell the US delegation what they need to do to get in line with the treaty. 5️⃣Our organizations can use this for further advocacy and putting pressure on legislators to move forward - because the world is watching us. Dalam keterangannya, Pigai meminta aparat penegak hukum untuk membedakan pengunjuk rasa dengan perusuh, serta menjunjung sikap profesional, jujur, adil, dan objektif. Pigai juga menegaskan pentingnya restorative justice bagi demonstran yang tidak melakukan pelanggaran berat, serta pemenuhan hak-hak dasar, termasuk kesehatan dan kebutuhan hidup, bagi mereka yang ditahan. Si tratta di una questione di estrema urgenza, poiché un numero elevato di prigionieri politici si trova attualmente nel braccio della morte. La comunità internazionale non può rimanere in silenzio e immobile, esiste il timore concreto che il regime iraniano possa rendersi di nuovo responsabile di un massacro come nell’estate del 1988 quando a seguito di una fatwa dell’Ayatollah Khomeini, 30mila prigionieri politici, per la maggior parte appartenenti al Mek/Pmoi, vennero giustiziati per la loro opposizione alla dittatura dei mullah. Nonostante il conflitto in atto – conclude Terzi – la macchina repressiva del regime, ormai totalmente in mano, come l’intero Paese, delle Guardie Rivoluzionarie Irgc, si dimostra sempre più inarrestabile in quello che appare come un regolamento di conti con i milioni di iraniani che a gran voce invocano democrazia e libertà per la loro Nazione. Today, I had the opportunity to highlight the case of Tharaki Sivarasan within the broader context of freedom of expression and the protection of journalists. His assassination reflects a persistent pattern of violations against Tamil media professionals in Sri Lanka, including killings, enforced disappearances, and forced exile. As reaffirmed under Article 19 of the ICCPR and General Comment No. 34, freedom of expression is a fundamental right that must be protected without discrimination.
