How you speak to yourself matters! It REALLY matters. You can see the light go out from my eyes as I move my thoughts from loving to hating myself. My inner voice was so hard on me when I was at my illest - not only did it make my day to day experience miserable but it also increased how much pain I felt. Let me explain… Our amygdala (the part of your brain responsible for detecting threats) can’t tell the difference between our own voice and some else’s. When we pressure or criticise ourselves we feel it just as if someone else was bullying us. This can mean we feel unsafe and vulnerable as our inner voice keeps triggering our treat response. And a heightened threat response can turn up the volume on our pain and tip us into flare territory. This is known as the fear - pain cycle - and our thoughts can contribute to it. This doesn’t mean we blame ourselves - absolutely not - this is a natural response to a hard situation and one of the ways our brain tries to keep us safe. BUT the good news is that we can empower ourselves with this knowledge and practices that help change our inner voice, lower our threat response and help calm a system that is stretched thin. Giving us more capacity and control over our day to day experience. This is what we will be digging into in the first few days of The Festive Flare Buffer - my new group program designed to help those navigating chronic pain support themselves and their bodies through the extra demands of the festive season.
