Closed syllables, which contain short vowels, are the most common syllable type in English. “Closed syllables are the most common syllable type in English; they account for about 50 percent of the syllables in running text." — Louisa Moats, Speech to Print One routine I love from the IMSE structured literacy approach is the vowel intensive drill. Students hold vowel cards. I say the short vowel sound. The student lifts the correct vowel It only takes a few minutes, but it gives students repeated practice hearing and identifying vowel sounds. Simple routines like this help build the automaticity students need for decoding and spelling. The @imse_og course has been fantastic. #structuredliteracy #scienceofreading #OrtonGillingham
