Our team has been working around the clock preparing for the upcoming heatwave 🌡️ and increased bushfire danger days 🔥 — but heartbreakingly, our clinic is still being inundated with koalas injured by vehicle strikes 🚗 and dog attacks 🐕. Beautiful Paddy-Cake 🐨 found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time after taking a wrong turn and ending up inside an enclosed yard with a dog. Thankfully, the dog was called off 🙏 and our team was able to safely retrieve her from high up in a pine tree 🌲. With a puncture wound to her face 😔 and saliva detected around her abdomen, Paddy-Cake now needs a full veterinary assessment 🩺 to understand the extent of her injuries and give her the best possible chance at recovery 💚. Every call, every rescue, every minute counts for wildlife like Paddy-Cake. Thank you for standing with us 💕

This gorgeous healthy guy just needed some help in finding a safer place to live!!! He was seen by a member of public (MOP) attempting to cross a very busy road. Thankfully the concerned MOP shepherded him off the road and he then decided to climb a tree - it just wasn’t a safe area for him to stay, so he was retrieved from the tree and moved to a much nicer nearby park. Initially upon release he decided to run directly toward his rescuer before spotting a tree he chose to climb. Maybe he just wanted to thank his rescuer 🤷 😄. He stopped and looked back at his rescuer for a moment before heading further up where he announced himself with a couple of little grunts and bellows (sound up). This is Roger—and he won our hearts on a recent trip to @phillipislandnp Phillip Island Koala Conservation Reserve. 💚😍 Rescued during the devastating 2019/20 bushfires after suffering severe burns to his torso and paws, Roger’s journey is one of strength, resilience, human care, and courage. We were saddened to learn that there are now only approximately 20 koalas in the wild on Phillip Island. Back in the 1970s, the estimate was at 1,000. Due to mass habitat destruction and increased cars on the island, the number is devastatingly low. In addition, there is a low reproduction rate—for an unknown reason—despite there being healthy females in the conservation area. Another stark reminder of how precarious the koala’s future is. And why we do what we do.

🐨 Jack’s Story We recently admitted this young koala, Jack, after he fell approximately 12 metres when a branch broke beneath him. Following a thorough clinical assessment, Jack does not appear to have sustained any major injuries, which is an encouraging outcome given the height of the fall. However, falls from trees are a documented cause of fractures in koalas, particularly to the torso, and internal injuries and delayed trauma responses are not always apparent on initial examination. For this reason, Jack will remain in our care for close monitoring over the coming days. Traumatic injuries are among the most common reasons wild koalas are admitted to wildlife hospitals, and thorough assessment following a fall of this magnitude is essential regardless of how the animal presents on arrival. Our team will continue to assess Jack regularly to ensure nothing has been missed before he can be released back to the wild. Jack’s care is made possible by your generous support. 💔 It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of Big Al, a beautiful koala who came to us after a dog attack. As you will see in the video, Big Al looks relatively ok from the outside. This is exactly what makes dog attacks so deceptive. Internally the damage to his abdomen was simply not compatible with life. Our team did everything we could for him, but ultimately his injuries were just too great to overcome. Never assume a koala is fine just because they look it. The real devastation is so often hidden deep inside where you cannot see it.
