Less… or more? How many highlights does a face really need before it loses its silence? In iconography, we don’t paint light — we reveal it. Second highlight — more clarity. Third highlight — more structure. And then… stop. Because less is better than more. The moment you add too much white, the form dies. The moment you control the contrast, the face begins to breathe. Do you know when to stop? Or do you always want to add just a little more? Icon painting is not about decoration. It’s about discipline. It’s about light. It’s about restraint. Итак, продолжаем писать лик. Построение второго света, румяны и подготовка под движки. Первый свет сделан из охры и киновари. Во второй свет добавил небольшое количество свинцовых белил (женской руке рекомендую брать титановые белила, т.к. они не токсичны и их используют в пищевой промышленности). Моделируется тоже постепенно от самых ярких мест с растяжкой. Румяны - киноварь с добавлением второго охрения, чтобы смотрелось мягко. В конце делаю объединяющий лессировочный слой на весь лик из первого света. Третий этап будет позже. Это движки и описи. Students have had a chance to watch and learn the process of building layers of paint… step after step to completion. Currently the Buon Fresco residency with Mihai Coman is underway, soon to finish the last day on Monday. NI KA means “conquers” or “is victorious” Together, IC XC NI KA: Jesus Christ conquers. Conquers: sin, death, the devil, the grave This inscription is found on icons of Christ, on the Cross and on the prosphora used in the Divine Liturgy because it announces the heart of the Gospel: Christ did not merely suffer, He triumphed. “Christ defeated death by death itself, and through the Cross He revealed His victory.” ~ Saint John Chrysostom When Orthodox Christians see IC XC NI KA, we are reminded that: the Cross is not defeat, the tomb is not the end and evil does not have the final word. The victory of Christ is not symbolic, but rather real, eternal and active in the life of the Church. The Trifacial Trinity: The Controversy Behind the Iconography #art #arthistory #painting The controversy over the iconography arose because it resembled pagan depictions of multi-headed deities like Hecate, leading the Catholic Church to reject it as “unnatural.” Concerns also arose that the image could cause confusion or heresy, as some might interpret it as Modalism (God as one person in different modes) or Tritheism (God as three separate Gods). Which would contradict the Church’s teaching that one God exists as three co-equal, co-eternal persons sharing a single divine essence. Although banned in Europe, the image became popular in the Spanish Americas during the 18th century, especially within the Cusco School in present-day Peru, where Church authorities saw the three-faced depiction as an effective tool for teaching the Trinity.
