As each art residency at Cap Karoso, it is an encounter of two cultures, a bridge between contemporary art and ancestral craft of Sumbanese people.
**The Voice of Ikat and Gold Embroidery**
« During my studies, I learned the principles of Ikat and gained insight into the complexity of its production. I was fortunate to meet the inhabitants of Kuri Village on the island of Sumba, who specialize in this technique. Each stage of the process, from cotton fiber cultivation and indigo farming to dye preparation, binding, and finally weaving, is carried out by hand in the village. The women focus on weaving, while the men prepare the patterns. The motifs have remained consistent over time, featuring designs such as lions, flowers, horses, and mamuli. The fabric is used for various ceremonies, including weddings and funerals, and serves as a blanket for sleeping while traveling, as well as a means of passing down their history.
To symbolize our meeting in a simple yet meaningful way, I highlighted certain details of a large indigo ikat adorned with gold embroidery. The colors blue, ecru, and gold come together to reflect the essence of our encounter. » Marie Berthouloux
