🤖⛄ Imagineering Explained: Disney’s Olaf robot can WALK ON A MOVING BOAT?! I asked Imagineering’s Lab Director how it works. During the new A Celebration in Arendelle show at the upcoming World of Frozen in Paris, a free-roaming Olaf animatronic walks, turns, and performs an entire 15-minute show on a boat that swiftly moves and rotates. I saw it in person, and it broke my brain. Getting a bipedal robot to walk in controlled conditions is hard enough. Doing it on a rocking, unpredictable platform? That sounds impossible. So how did Disney pull that off? I asked Moritz Bächer, Lab Director of Disney’s Zurich-based robotics team, and the secret sauce has two ingredients. First, Imagineering is using Deep Reinforcement Learning, an AI technique where the robots teach themselves through trial and error and improve through experience. Olaf is essentially learning to walk the way a toddler does. But where things get truly wild is Kamino, Disney’s simulator that is “a GPU-accelerated physics solver designed for accurate simulation of complex mechanical systems.” Moritz told me that they can train Olaf for extreme conditions and forces inside Kamino. And Physical Olaf learns from what Digital Olaf already experienced. And Kamino can run thousands of different environments in parallel on a single GPU, meaning Olaf learns in a fraction of the time a human would. According to Moritz, in simulation Olaf learns the equivalent of a decade of training across all sorts of conditions. So when Disney put their cutting-edge Olaf on a real boat for the first time, was Moritz nervous? Not at all. That’s the confidence that comes from thousands of simulated hours. I met ROBOT OLAF!!! ❄️ He’s a walking talking Disney robotic dreamt up by @waltdisneyimagineering’s research & development team, and the tech required to create this real-life snowman is WAYYY more impressive than Elsa’s ice magic 🧊✨ The team had to overcome massive engineering challenges and utilized reinforcement learning to make him, but for anyone (like me) who got B- grades in science class and doesn’t *quite* know what that means, all u gotta know is Olaf can can speak in conversation (!!) answer questions (!!) look you right in the eye (!!) and, if you ask nicely enough, even do a little dance ◡̈ It’s shocking how Disney’s newest creation doesn’t feel like a technologically savvy robot…but an animated snowman come to life. and my EXTREMELY rare opportunity to see how REAL he feels up close?! Glistening snow and all?! Well, lets just say it blew my mind and melted my heart 🥹 📍 Olaf will debut as part of entertainment within Disneyland Paris’ World of Frozen at Disney Adventure World park this month, and soon at Hong Kong Disneyland. 📣 Comment below if you want him to come to Disney World or Disneyland, and hopefully they will hear our cries!!!
