THWorking with schools to support children's SEMH (social, emotional and mental health) is a real privilege.
A lot of these children have struggled with SEN needs, autism or ADHD. Some might be school refuses and others may be struggling with difficult things at home which mean they need support with their emotional well-being. For many the standard classroom and expectations are not meeting their needs.
The numbers of children struggling in education are rising so it is great to see that schools are trying to support them.
I think it's really important however that when creating an SEMH hub, schools and councils also consider what is IN the rooms. If classrooms look and feel like a normal classroom children won't want to be in there. Many of them have been out of education for a while or have have been on half day timetables and their experience of the classroom has been a negative one.
All children deserve classrooms that are comfortable and meet their needs especially children who are struggling!
