This video is a textbook example of Relative Motion and Inertia.
When the man throws the can while the boat is moving, the can isn't just moving upward; it already possesses the horizontal velocity of the boat. Because of Newton’s First Law (Inertia), the can continues to move forward at that same speed while it is in the air.
Since both the boat and the can are traveling forward at the same rate, the can stays perfectly aligned above the boat. To the person on the boat, the can appears to go straight up and down, even though to someone standing on the shore, it follows a long curved path (a parabola).

Physics is all around us, often hiding in the simplest of tricks. This impressive display of timing and balance is a perfect example of how the laws of motion govern everything we see.
🧪 The Science Behind the Trick:
What you’re seeing is a brilliant application of Newton's First Law of Motion, also known as the Law of Inertia. It states that an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an external force.
When the wooden plank is struck quickly, the force is applied only to the plank. Because the movement is so fast, the friction between the plank and the glass isn't strong enough to pull the glass along with it. As a result, the glass stays in its original position—or in this case, falls straight down into the support—while the plank zips away!
🎯 Why It Works:
Inertia: The glass "wants" to stay right where it is.
Velocity: The high speed of the strike minimizes the time the force has to act on the glass.
Gravity: Once the support is gone, gravity takes over to pull the glass straight down.
It’s a high-stakes way to prove that science is always at work, even during a magic trick!
