to maintain my weekly consistency, short skate sessions are a far better option than not skating at all - I was too tired to drive all the way to the track to do long miles today. I try to do 10-16 miles once a week but that might be too hard of a push for me to keep consistent to start!

ANSW Genesee isn’t technically difficult. No turns, no cross traffic, and it even rolls uphill at the end—so no braking is required. The pavement isn’t perfect, but it’s decent. And it’s pretty short—you only need to hold it together for about 15 seconds.
What makes Genesee remarkable is the drop. The steepness hits you all at once at the top.
I brought one of the most experienced skaters in Seattle there recently. He crested the top, saw the hill falling away before him… and immediately bailed. (Better at the top than halfway down.)
Like most adrenaline sports, downhill inline skating is a mix of technique and commitment. And by commitment, I mean this: once you drop in, your focus has to be entirely on the HOW. Not the fear of failure, not the what-ifs. Just your posture, the pavement, and navigating a safe line from top to bottom.
Whether it’s bombing a hill or bashing a set of stairs, trusting your body to stay upright is often the very thing that helps keeps you upright.
At the highest levels, downhill skating demands incredible technical skill. But on most of the hills I skate, I rarely even need to brake. It’s closer to a 1:3 ratio—one part skill to three parts confidence. The biggest safety factor is committing fully to the descent: visualizing your line instead of your worst-case scenario. Fear is the mind killer, after all. You must anticipate obstacles—but without feeding the fear that tries to take over.
That’s why Genesee is such a unique training ground. It desensitizes you to that sudden acceleration and the gut-drop feeling that comes with it, building the mental fortitude required for downhill skating.
It’s a scary hill to skate. But like bungee jumping, the challenge is almost entirely in your head.
