Context : When the Spanish arrived in Mesoamerica in the early 1500s, conquest was military first, linguistic second. But language became one of the most powerful tools of control. After Hernán Cortés defeated the Mexica in 1521, Spanish authorities and missionaries spread their language through administration, religion, and trade. Indigenous elites were often taught Spanish to serve as intermediaries in the new colonial system. Friars from orders like the Franciscans and Dominicans learned local languages such as Nahuatl and Maya to convert Indigenous populations to Christianity, but they also promoted Spanish as the language of power. At first, the Crown tolerated Indigenous languages for practical governance. Over time, especially in the 18th century, policies shifted toward “Hispanization,” pushing Spanish as the dominant public language. Schools, churches, and legal systems operated increasingly in Spanish. The result was not simple replacement but blending. Spanish absorbed Indigenous words for foods, places, and daily life. Meanwhile, many communities preserved their native languages alongside Spanish. What emerged was not pure Castilian transplanted to the Americas, but a distinctly Mesoamerican Spanish shaped by conquest, resistance, adaptation, and survival. #spain #spanish #mesoamerica #funny #invasion

Il y en avait tellement sur la route et ils s envolaient juste à notre passage en venant s éclater sur la voiture 🫣 A un moment il a fallu s arrêter pour nettoyer tout ceux qui étaient posés sur le radiateur 🤦‍♀️ Bon on n était pas si mal pour nettoyer entourés de dromadaires!!! 🐪 un bon coup de balayette a l intérieur du capot et nous sommes repartis jusqu a une station service pour nettoyer ce carnage 🤪 A priori la veille il y en avait eu pas mal aussi 🫣 La fin du trajet jusqu à Dakhla s est bien terminé!! 🙏 A un moment Adrien disait qu il aimerait bien voir ce qu était un nuage de criquets mais en fait après il s est ravisé 😂 Tu as déjà vu ça?
